From Edgar Allan Poe's 1841 tale “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, widely held to be the first modern detective story. Its hero, C. Auguste Dupin, solves an apparently impossible crime through ratiocination — the disciplined fusion of observation, evidence, and inference. The “Rue” is the Rue Morgue itself.
